A Maine Engagement Session with Bella & Felix — Nubble Lighthouse & Long Sands Beach

People ask me sometimes what the point of an engagement session is, especially if they already took photos when they actually got engaged. And it's a fair question! But here's the thing I like to remind them: your photographer is practically a member of your wedding party. You're with them all day, sometimes longer than your soon-to-be spouse. So it really matters that you've met, that you've gotten comfortable with each other, and that you've had a chance to figure out how you move together in front of a camera.

Having an engagement session means that on your wedding day, when I say something like "ok, kiss with your teeth", you're not looking at me like I have three heads. You already know what I mean. We can move faster, we can get back to the party sooner, and the whole day just flows.

Bella and Felix were getting married in just a few weeks when we met for their engagement session. So their session at Nubble Lighthouse and Long Sands Beach was also the perfect chance for us to get to know each other, and for them to get comfortable in front of the camera before the big day. And I'm so glad we did!

Bella is a ray of sunshine. Felix is her rock. You could see it in every single frame.

We started at Nubble Lighthouse, and the lighting was gorgeous from the first frame. These two were completely game for anything. At one point Felix was lifting Bella up in the air for some shots so naturally Bella decided she wanted a turn. The resulting photo is genuinely one of the silliest images I've captured all summer.

At one point I asked them to do a dip, and the way Bella moved made me immediately clock some dance training. And I was right! Bella has a background in dance & theater so it made perfect sense that she was such a natural in front of the camera.

From there we moved over to Long Sands, where the light shifted into something that felt classically summer on the East Coast. The kind of end-of-day glow that makes you think of ice cream after a long day in the sun and not wanting the evening to end.

I always like to end a beach session with some splashing around in the water. Felix, it turned out, was already planning on going for a swim after the session anyway, so really we just gave him a head start. They went in the deepest of anyone I've photographed this summer, so they get bragging rights.

Bella & Felix, thank you for the best evening. This one will stick with me for a long time.
